Taking your new puppy home

What You Will Need When Taking Your Yorkie Home

Starting Off on the Right paw 🐾

1 Food & Water

  • Royal Canin Puppy Dry Food
  • Boiled chicken breast and a small amount of canned puppy food
These foods are full of enticing smells and help promote eating during the transition to a new home
  • Bottled water only (initially)
This allows your puppy to adjust gradually to a change in water You may slowly mix in your home water over time

2. Rest & Quiet Time

Your puppy needs frequent quiet time just like an infant or toddler

Too much romping or play can cause overexertion and may lead to dangerously low blood sugar levels. Calm rest periods are essential for your puppy’s health and development

3. Exercise Pen / Play Yard (Very Important)

An exercise pen or play yard is essential to keep your puppy safe when you are

  • Away from home
  • Busy
  • Allowing your puppy to rest

Just like a baby a puppy should not have free run of the house The play yard becomes your puppy’s safe haven

This area should include

  • A comfortable bed
  • Safe toys
  • Food and water

In the beginning your puppy should remain in the play yard when not under direct supervision until they mature enough to learn the layout of their new home

You can purchase play yards online or at stores such as Amazon Petco  or similar retailers often at a very reasonable price

Important

Until a puppy is at least 6 months of age playtime should be limited to 1–2 hours at a time and always supervised When your puppy is not exercising or playing under supervision, they should be safely resting in their play yard

4. Water Bottle

We highly recommend a water bottle that attaches securely to your puppy’s play yard and is used with bottled water

This prevents your puppy from stepping in water becoming chilled or soiling their space while still allowing access to fresh water at all times

5. Bed, Toys & Treats

Provide a soft, cozy bed and toys designed specifically for puppy safety.

When choosing treats, be mindful of recalls. Select trusted brands with no recall history, or consider making homemade treats for added peace of mind

6. Potty Pads

Have potty pads ready from day one to support potty training and prevent accidents during the adjustment period

7. Safety & Heights

Please remember Yorkies have NO fear of heights until closer to adulthood

As tempting as it may be

  • Do not sleep with your Yorkie puppy
  • Do not allow your puppy on couches, beds, or high surfaces without supervision

Falls can cause serious injury This is another reason why play yards are lifesavers for both you and your puppy

An ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure

8. Love, Patience & Understanding

Most of all, give your puppy plenty of love and patience

“Patience is a virtue” with a new puppy

It can take 9–12 months for a puppy to mature and truly understand

  • Eating routines and knowing when they are full
  • Heights and safety awareness
  • Voice commands
  • Potty training

We promise that all the love you give your Yorkie will be returned to you unconditionally

Enjoy this precious puppy stage—they grow up faster than you realize

9. Puppy-Proof Your Home (Very Important!)

Yorkies are extremely curious—and FAST! They will explore and chew on anything within reach

Before bringing your puppy home

  • Tape loose electrical cords to baseboards
  • Store household chemicals and hazardous items out of reach
  • Remove plants and loose rugs
  • Secure or repair unstable or wobbly furniture
  • Block access to the backs of TV stands computer desks, and cabinets
  • Install baby gates where needed
  • Set up the play pen in advance

Once you think your home is fully puppy-proofed get down on the floor and look around from your puppy’s eye level

Check for items that could fall from tables or countertops, objects reachable from sofas or chairs, and don’t forget what’s under the bed.
